Consultation

Consultation is the most important part of medicine. The doctor needs to know about the problems you are having, so that further tests can be directed at likely diagnoses. This is also your opportunity to find out about your condition and to have your questions answered.

Clues about your condition may be found in seemingly unrelated areas of your life. You may be asked questions about your work, hobbies and habits. Your current and past medical problems may be related to your eye condition. It is important to note any medications or eyedrops you are currently taking.

Your vision will be assessed and the pressure inside your eye will be measured. Your pupils will be dilated with eyedrops to allow a full examination of your eyes. Slit-lamp microscope, indirect ophthalmoscope and diagnostic lenses are essential tools for a complete examination of your eyes.

There are problems that require an immediate attention and they include:

• Sudden loss or blurring of vision
• Distortion of images
• Appearance of shadows or gaps in your vision
• Flashes and floaters
• Painful eye
• Eye injuries
• Red eye with pain or blurring of vision

Gradual changes in vision should be assessed as soon as possible. There are also conditions that may not cause symptoms initially but can lead to devastating vision loss when the disease becomes advanced. For example, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma may initially affect your peripheral vision and you may be unaware of the problem. If you are at risk, regular monitoring will be recommended.
